Mary Hopkin - Pieces
With ten stunning songs Mary continues to prove her strength as a songwriter as well as a performer.
The songs are an eclectic mix of quirky pop, ballads, Celtic folk and sublime ambient, and Mary's vocals are front and centre, rich and clear.
Mary writes and records with a minumum of fuss at her own studio. She lays down the vocals and instrument tracks and then works with Christian Thomas (partner of her daughter, Jessica Lee Morgan), to mix. He also adds bass guitar where required. Jessica has written the lyrics of one song and contributes guitar and ukulele. Morgan Visconti, Mary's son, adds electric guitar. All three also sing backing vocals here and there.
Mary also directs the artwork on her albums, photographing, painting or drawing as required, and Jessica assembles the graphics.

Reviews
Spill Magazine: Pieces is a fantastic album full of melodic folk/pop and rock songs. Hopkin’s vocals are as good as they has always been, with a combination of gentleness and vulnerability. That doesn’t mean she is a pushover, because she is not, but on songs like “Face Your Fears” she is giving worldly advice and she does it with such tenderness. Elsewhere, such as “Golden Hero”, which is a protest, she presents as much stronger.The album is beautifully arranged. Very subtle use of strings and other instruments augment the piano or guitar. The music is somewhat sparse but very effective, and does not require huge production. In a sense, when you are listening to the album, one gets the sense of hearing a performance.
